jennys puppy page
Hi,my name is jennifer and my mummy and daddy have asked me if I can explain in my own words for boys and girls just like me what we should all do and like my daddy says, not do with your new puppy.I can remember when we got our very first puppy when I was a lot younger and my 2 sisters and me got into all sorts of trouble because we didn`t understand what mummy and daddy said was ok or not.
firstly your new puppy will be very very scared when you take them home as it will be the first time they have been away from it`s mummy.your mummy or daddy will put the bed in a nice quiet place away from cold drafts for it to sleep and this is a lot for a new puppy.my daddy always told us off for not letting puppy sleep when she wanted to as this is important and he or she must be left alone when they sleep. |
This is rosie with a puppy..daddy said we musn`t grab the puppy and wait for it to come over to us else it will learn to stay away from us and not look forward to playing with us all.Puppy has it`s own food and we must not fedd it on our own or we will get a bad puppy tummy and have to go to the vets..daddy told us that we must not let the puppy do bad things but not hit him or her if they do,he said to stand up and walk away if they are bad so they learn bad things stop play.

When we went to get our puppy daddy said that the best choice was the one that came to us to play and not the one with the best fur pattern..when your puppy wants to chew or bite mummy always puts a chew toy in the puppys mouth instead so they learn to chew toys and not our things..I have to also say that if you don`t tell a puppy it is wrong to bite straight away they don`t understand when you tell them the second time..

When we train the puppy on the lead daddy always says everyone has to do the same or the puppy won`t understand what we all want..it is the same in the house and with playing because if we al say different things puppy will get confused.here is a picture of bonnie and ruby in the snow and they played snowball catching as well..I don`t like toilet training as you have to pick up lots of wee papers so hide in the morning until mummy or daddy does it ha ha ha ..

I like puppies best when they are like this, their eyes don`t start to open until they are about 10 days old then they can see the world for the first time...They wake up and feed from mum, then wee and poo all over your hands before they go back to sleep again..at this age they rely on my mummy and daddy completely, that`s why they sleep with them all the time..
never give the puppy sweets or chocolate as it will get a really bad tummy...never smack your puppy if it bites you, just stand up and ignore it..always leave it alone when it is sleeping..and the most important thing is if you want to hold it sit on the floor as a puppy wriggles a lot and you might drop it. |
Picking the right puppy can be hard, and the pick of the litter may not always be for sale. There are more puppies that could be your four-legged friend in the litter. Your puppy should have at least it's first vaccination by the time you buy it.
It's a very scary few moments when your new puppy is taken away from it's mother. It is important to let your puppy know it is safe and secure when you are around it, but the best thing to do it is ignore it when it cries. When your new puppy cries, it wants attention. Ignoring it will get it quieter, as it will realise that crying won't get your attention. Your puppy may show signs of stress after entering it's new home, like chewing and crying. Everyone who gets a puppy, no matter what breed, will face the crying and the chewing.
Your new puppy will want to feel happy around the home, and be eager to explore. Play with it and create a bond, before taking it elsewhere in the house. Your puppy should want to follow you, as pack leader. They feel secure when they know their place in the pack, which is preferably the lowest rank possible. When your puppy shows more excitement of being around you, you can start to take it around the house.
You should treat your puppy kindly, praising it when it does the right things. But in comes the bad puppy. Scold it as soon as it does the bad things, make it know that no means no. If you scold it after, it will not understand and carry on. Being firm is also important, with our dogs it wasn't easy. They were loking so innocent, when they weren't. No is one of the most important words you'll need to know when you're with a puppy, so make sure it knows what no really means!
No titbits! Feeding from the dinner table can make your puppy beg, and then you'll be stuck with a puppy clinging to you every time you try and eat something! Some titbits can be dangerous to dogs, and the biggest danger is chocolate! So remember, don't feed your puppy while you eat. Only after you've eaten.
Don't be too rough with your puppy! If you are a child, then listen to your mummy and daddy, they will tell you that being rough with your puppy will get it wound up. You don't want your puppy jumping on you, do you? Your puppy can tell when you are happy, sad and lots of other feelings. Being calm around your puppy will let it be calm as well.
Puppies love to play, so excersise is important. If you let your bulldog get lazy, it will get fat! No owner wants that! Remember not to over-excersise your puppy, especially in the heat. It could collapse with heat-stroke, or something else fatal. Tug-toys and bones get your puppy's jaws stronger, which is good. Be sure to play a game of tug with your puppy every so often! Strong dogs are made with play and plenty of walks down the road, so keep it up doggie walkers!
If you are interested, you may start to enter fun puppy shows around your area! They are only fun, but winning is a nice bonus. You don't see many bulldogs around at puppy shows anymore, so your puppy will stand out from the crowd. Your puppy will need to know how to walk to heel before you enter the ring,. so practise with that first. In Kennel Club registered shows, your puppy must be over 6 months to enter any classes. You'll have plenty of time to practise by then.
